Background of the study:
Family stability is a critical determinant of youth development, and broken marriages have been increasingly linked to higher rates of youth delinquency. In Ife South, the dissolution of marital relationships has had profound effects on family dynamics, leading to emotional distress, economic hardship, and a lack of consistent parental guidance (Olawale, 2023). Research shows that children from broken homes are more likely to exhibit behavioral problems, engage in substance abuse, and display tendencies toward delinquency (Adejumo, 2024). The destabilizing effect of marital breakdown often undermines the socialization process, leaving youths vulnerable to negative peer influences and criminal behavior (Bello, 2025). This study investigates the impact of broken marriages on youth delinquency in Ife South by analyzing family structures, community support systems, and delinquency statistics. The research integrates sociological theories with empirical data to elucidate the pathways through which familial disruption contributes to criminal behavior among young people. The goal is to provide insights that inform interventions aimed at reinforcing family support and mitigating the risk of delinquency, thereby fostering safer and more resilient communities.

Statement of the problem:
In Ife South, the high incidence of broken marriages is believed to contribute significantly to youth delinquency. The absence of stable family structures results in reduced supervision and guidance, which in turn increases the propensity for youths to engage in criminal activities (Oseni, 2023). This problem is compounded by economic difficulties and inadequate social support systems that fail to address the emotional needs of affected children (Ojo, 2024). Consequently, the community experiences heightened levels of delinquency and social disorder, further burdening local law enforcement and social services. This study seeks to explore the specific mechanisms by which broken marriages contribute to youth delinquency, aiming to recommend targeted interventions to ameliorate these adverse outcomes (Akinmoladun, 2025).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the prevalence of broken marriages and its impact on family dynamics in Ife South.

  2. To examine the relationship between family disruption and youth delinquency.

  3. To propose intervention strategies aimed at supporting affected youths.

Research questions:

  1. What is the relationship between broken marriages and youth delinquency in Ife South?

  2. How do family disruptions affect youth behavior?

  3. What support mechanisms can mitigate the negative effects of broken marriages on youth?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Broken marriages are significantly correlated with increased youth delinquency.

  2. Lack of parental guidance due to family disruption contributes to behavioral problems.

  3. Strengthening family support systems will reduce the incidence of youth delinquency.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth analysis of how broken marriages influence youth delinquency in Ife South. Its findings will assist social policymakers, educators, and community organizations in developing effective family support and intervention programs. By addressing the root causes of youth delinquency, the research aims to foster long-term social stability and community well-being (Olawale, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to examining the influence of broken marriages on youth delinquency in Ife South Local Government Area, focusing solely on familial and community-level factors.

Definitions of terms:

  • Broken Marriages: The dissolution or breakdown of marital relationships.

  • Youth Delinquency: Involvement of young people in illegal or anti-social behavior.

  • Family Support Systems: Structures and programs designed to provide emotional, financial, and social support to families.
